Art in various forms has always had a place in the psychiatric system, but in recent years interest in art as a resource in the health care system has increased significantly. This includes interventions in writing workshops led by writers. What happens in the shared space of writing and reading in the rooms where people write and read together as part of a treatment program? Based on my seven years of experience as a teacher of writing groups in the Mental Health Service of Copenhagen, Denmark, I aim to suggest what kind of practice-based knowledge the author possesses – or in other words: What does the writer know?
